7 Truths

5.  Freedom is not just a privilege…it is a responsibility that will take unbelievable discipline.
You want to be the boss. Think of all the freedom you will have. Except everyone is going to look to you to lead and you have to show up and lead. To have freedom, you have to fight for it. No one will give it to you. Not your team, not your investors, not your partners, and not your clients/customers. You have to balance your obsession with your vision and carve out your moments or you will flame out or when you get to the end of the road (whatever form it takes) you won’t have anything to look back on or anyone to look back with.
6.  Creativity always beats cash.
To go along with this hand in hand is the truism that perfect is the enemy of progress. If you can solve a problem without spending money, DO IT! I don’t care if you got millions of dollars thrown at you, conserve and spend wisely.
7.  I believe.  I believe. I believe.
Look in the mirror and be a Stewart Smalley and say this to yourself. You need to do it because others will tear you down. It isn’t pretty. It isn’t nice. But, it is true. Like crabs in a crate. They could work together and escape, but instead they pull one another back down to suffer. So be your own biggest cheerleader.
1. If it’s to be, it’s up to me.
You will empty the trash, write your investment deck, program your website, meet with investors.  You will.  Memorize this and say it to yourself every morning.
2. Time is not on your side!
Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle, or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you better start running.”   You have competitors across the globe doing some version of what you have come up with (or you are definitely missing something). Get going and get used to it.
3.  The journey is the reward!
Entrepreneurism is not a goal or a place.  It is a mindset, a way of living, an attitude, a lifestyle, a passion, a way of seeing the world, a relationship to rules, an attitude that I can do this, an addiction.  You can’t teach entrepreneurism – you can only curate and foster it.  Nurture the beast or avoid it, but enjoy the ride while on the ride.  The world will call you insane, so be committed.
4.  I get by with a little help from my friends!
It’s odd that we must be self reliant, but will only succeed once we learn to trust others and ask for help.  You will need it and they will be there.  Be there for others, too.
